The Department and the University Clinic of Dermatovenerology started their activity in January 1946, after the founding of Chisinau State Institute of Medicine on August 31, 1945, based on St. Petersburg Institute of Medicine No. 2, which was evacuated in Kislovodsk during World War II and later transferred to Chisinau.

University professor Mihail Borzov was the founder of the Department and the first head of the Dermatological Clinic between 1946-1959. During the period 1959-1989, Ludmila Bogaciova, Professor Emeritus, was elected head of the department.  Professor L. Bogaciova defended her doctoral thesis in medical sciences entitled Diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of trichomoniasis in men in 1962. Between 1989 - 2010, the Department was headed by Gheorghe Muşet, Professor Emeritus, who defended his doctoral thesis in medical sciences Lysosomal enzymes and changes in the vegetative system in patients with psoriasis in 1987. Since 2010, the leadership of the Department has been ensured by the Dean of Faculty of Medicine No. 2, Associate Professor Mircea Beţiu.

During different periods of time, the following staff members worked at the Department: Associate Professors A. Bragarenco, I. Vovcu; assistant professors P. Cozişcurt, A. Şcerbacova, C. Barbăneagră, E. Serbin, N. Jelamschi. At present, Associate Professors Gr. Morcov, L. Gugulan, V. Sturza, V. Gogu, B. Nedelciuc and assistant professors Nina Fiodorova, V. Caproş, V. Ţâbârnă continue to work at the department.

During 60 years of activity, two Doctor Habilitated theses (L. Bogaciova, 1962; G. Muşet, 1987) and 17 PhD dissertations in medical sciences (under the guidance of professor M. Borzov - A. Mejevalova, 1955; A. Bragarenco, 1958; C. Barbăneagră, 1959; under the guidance of professor L. Bogaciova - I. Vovcu, 1966; V. Bilic, 1969; Gh. Muşet, 1970; I. Bologan, 1973; A. Josanu, 1973 ; L. Gugulan, 1975; Gr. Morcov, 1981; V. Sturza, 1988; T. Condrea, 1991 and under the leadership of professor Gh. Muşet - V. Gogu, 2000; B. Nedelciuc, 2000; M. Beţiu, 2002; E. Raevschi, 2003, O. Tabuică, 2012) were defended at the Department.

The achievements of the Department include:publishing a series of monographs, important scientific and didactic-methodical works, organizing four conferences (1959, 1969, 1985, 1994) and four national congresses of dermatology with international participation (1997, 2000, 2004, 2010), the respective materials being published in special editions.

The clinical base of the Department is the Republican Dermatovenerological Dispensary public health institution (currently Hospital of Dermatology and Communicable Diseases), except for the years 1972-1986, when its clinical base was Chisinau Municipal Dermatovenerological Dispensary.
